Excerpt

The Battle of Antietam was one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. It was fought on September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland. The Union Army, led by General George B. McClellan, faced off against the Confederate Army, led by General Robert E. Lee.

The battle began at dawn with a Confederate attack on the Union left flank. The Confederates were initially successful, but the Union forces eventually rallied and drove them back. The battle continued throughout the day, with both sides suffering heavy casualties.

The Battle of Antietam was a tactical draw, but it had a significant impact on the course of the war. It was the first time that the Union Army had defeated the Confederate Army in a major battle. The victory gave President Abraham Lincoln the confidence to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all slaves in Confederate-held territory.
